Drugs: Destruction of Society

This report is dealing with the international picture of illegal drugs, and their destructive elements across the world. The report looks at both manufacturing countries as well as consumer countries of illegal drugs that impact on every country around the world.

Manufacturing of Illegal Drugs:

The manufacture of cocaine mainly comes from Colombia in South America, as the conditions for the production of cocaine is ideal. The vast terrain is difficult to police, as there are many farmers who have small-holdings and production labs deep in the vast forests, and jungle vegetation.

Another country that manufactures the world’s supply of heroin is Afghanistan. Unfortunately, Afghanistan is a tired old country ravished  by centuries of war and not letting-up while terrorism was allowed to exist under the Taliban rule after the exit of the old Soviet Union military presence.

Both of these countries have Western help in destroying the growing, and production of these two potent illegal drugs. Though another widely grown and manufactured illegal drug marijuana,, which is not only grown in hot-dry countries but there has been an increase in Western countries in particular, home-growing marijuana using sophisticated greenhouse and irrigation equipment.

Consumption of Illegal Drugs:

As the illegal drugs market affects every country around the world, with an annual turnover of approximately $400bn (UN figures.) This shows us that the illegal market is one of the top products that rival the oil industry. The statistics by various national governmental agencies, as well as global agencies such as The United Nations shows us that illegal drug use amongst the younger generation has increased. Particular age groups are 16 to 24 year olds is of concern as it enables the continuation of the illegal drug market. To defeat the illegal drug market it needs to look at the consumption countries, as less demand equals less production, and then the illegal drug market will shrink over-time.

The War on Illegal Drugs Trade:

The War on Drugs was been coined and at times been a phrase, which has been under attack as the world is losing that war on drugs. The idea that decriminalisation of illegal drugs will somehow win this war on drugs is very misinformed. Calls for State dealerships so that governments can regulate the illegal drug market and push the evils of drug dealers out of existence is another flawed argument. While Western countries in particular are capitalist economies therefore the drug cartels and dealers will undercut the State, and then you will have a renamed competitive war on drugs situation.

The Social Impact within Communities across the World:

The social problems that occur in communities worldwide are mafia and drug cartel violence as we see happening in Mexico. This has led to the Mexican government under the orders of the Mexican President to launch an all-out offensive on drug gangs and the illegal drug trade. The United States of America has been forced to act to reinforce their borders with Mexico and to send in Drug Enforcement Agents (DEA) to help the Mexican authorities. Colombia has seen over the years a transition from guerrilla and paramilitary groups into the cocaine market for capital gains.

Mexico and Colombia are prime examples to what happens when you leave the illegal drug trade to permeate through society. We see the barbarity of the mafia gangs roaming around Mexican cities killing not only rival gang members, the military, and law enforcement, but also children at school innocent to the evil trappings of illegal drug consumption. The slaughtering of drug addicts in rehab clinics trying to get-off from the evils and damaging effects illegal drugs have burdened them.

We see all too apparent drug addicts committing crime in order to fund their drug dependency. Even in prison, drug addiction is rife and no safe haven if drug addicts what to go cold turkey.

We see away from the bright lights of major cities the depravation and homelessness due to drug dependency. The rise of drug-related homicide is too prevalent in so many city districts. What is happening isn’t because of law enforcement and governments trying to tackle the illegal drug market, it’s happening because of the content of the illegal drugs and how that impacts both mentally and physically on the human body.

As described in the example relating to Mexico we have seen what lengths drug dealers go to in order to try and increase the consumption by getting as many people addicted to illegal drugs. The use of schoolchildren to deal in schools has become an unfortunate reality, and the only reason is to have the next generation of customers. The profitability factor has come into play as the explosion of illegal drug use of the 1960’s in Western countries took hold.

Solutions to the Illegal Drug Trade:

Governments and law enforcement agencies have dealt with the illegal drug trade from producer to user with various degrees of success and failure.

European countries such as Britain, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal still have strong links to various degrees to countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, the African continent, as well as the Eastern part of the world.

Britain has given money to the Colombian government to help with the fight against the illegal drug trade. Another job Britain and France does is to use the navy to patrol the Caribbean to capture and disrupt the exportation routes from South America to the West Coast of Africa. The United States of America invests hugely to Latin American countries, and patrols her borders on both land and sea.

While the disruption of the supply of drugs is vital, the other part of the equation is to deal with those that are burdened with years of drug addiction, where the buzz of drug taking has long faded.

There are many drug rehabilitation programmes ranging from religious intervention, to adopting tough regimes of physical work to rid the human body of the dependency of illegal drugs. Other programmes that replace the illegal drug with a substitute such as methadone, isn’t getting a drug addict(s) off drug dependency but just replaces the craving of the illegal drug(s.)

Conclusion:

If there weren’t worldwide law enforcement in tackling illegal drugs we would see a rise in hospital drug dependency intake. Psychiatric hospitals would serve the drug addicts that have lost there minds due to years of drug abuse. Drug addiction creates inactivity and more dependency on welfare will increase. Social deprivation such as homelessness, and poorly educated and respectful individuals will increase in communities and society. Is this the sort of world we want to create and call home for Mankind?

The illegal drugs trade may never go away but those that seek a life away from illegal drugs should-be given the best possible support, as saving people from illegal drugs saves society as a whole, as well as future generations.

The saddest part of drug addiction is that it kills ambition, life, and the hope of a better and brighter future. Many drug addicts end-up dying a sad, unpromising existence, and a life cut with all of the shortcomings.
